This one seems good but I would be pretty disturbed if there was mature content in your earliest childhood memory

This is sort of a late question, but can you take the last line from nursery rhymes? 0.0

I'm new to the group and have found this awesome-looking contest!
It is a pity that we can only use the last line of a famous poem/poem by a famous poet... I would have loved to use the line 'But with one step backward taken' from the poem One Step Backward Taken By Robert Frost!

But it's okay! I have a few other favourite poems that are calling for me to use them. :D

If you are inspired by a random line from a poem feel free to use that for a poem and submit it to our regular gallery.

can it be the last two lines? the poem i want to use is [link] and i feel like it would be really awkward to only use the last line.

Must it be the last line? Why not a favorite line from a poem or song, would that not add more to the notion of inspiration?

As the admin of the group it was personal choice to make it the last line. Any line from a poem seems very random.

I did not say any line, I said favorite line. I think it would be almost patronizing to explain why stating,"...it was a personal choice to make it the last line.Any line from a poem seems very random" fails logically. Moreover, I was not trying to be snide, I just see no reason to confine oneself to only the last line. A song/poem (it was a poem that was doctored later into a song) such as Leonard Cohen's Avalanche maintains many great lines. For instance the last line of the first stanza, "You who wish to conquer pain,You must learn, learn to serve me well."How about from the final stanza, "Don't love me quite so fiercely now, when you know that you are not sure." Even the very first line is quite good "Well, I walked into an avalanche it covered up my soul." There is no reason why these lines cannot inspire someone, anymore or less than the last line, because inspiration hits everyone differently. You need not worry though,I will not be entering your confinement.

Sorry for the confusion and I'm truly sorry if I offended you. I wasn't trying to patronize you at all, I was just explaining my reasoning for choosing these parameters. And to me a favorite line is still a random line.

And it's fine if you don't want to enter, but a contest is meant to have set boundaries. They are meant to push people's creativity, to make them think and work a little harder. And if the rules of a contest are lax what's the point? It's not supposed to be easy.

There is no need for an apology, because my statement did not imply confusion or offense. What I said was that it would feel patronizing, for me to explain how your statement fails logically. This is what your statement consisted of: "...it was a personal choice to make it the last line. Any line from a poem seems very random" You can figure it out for yourself how your statement is unsuited to logic, if you do not see why, than you do not see why. My only pertinent implication came from this, "There is no reason why these lines (the different lines from the Avalanche example) cannot inspire someone, any more or less than the last line, because inspiration hits everyone differently". This does not imply difficulty; it implies that there is no justification for your confinement except for your own want. Here is a definition for random, ran•dom (rndm) adj.1. Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective.[link] When someone picks variable x and dubs it as a favorite x, are you saying that there is no stimuli (purpose), or prior experiences (patterns) that lead to x becoming a favorite? When someone adds the concept of favorite to a line of poetry, they do so because it brings about reminiscence, something familiar and or important to them. I am not being snide at all, I am pointing out the obvious. After this,if you want to learn about the psychology of human language, then I suggest you read Harvard professor Steven Pinker’s book “The Stuff of Thought”,you may also want to read the late great Erving Goffman’s book “The Presentation of Self in Everyday life”. Finally, yes, you can formulate your contests in whatever way you want, captive or more open. Due to my own literary notions, I will not try and limit inspiration in such ways. I do not think that I need any more clarification than this.
